Behind the diagnosis: Understanding the mental health dynamics in late-stage HIV patients

Abstract

Background: Individuals grappling with late-stage HIV diagnoses confront challenges extending far beyond physical health.  Understanding these dynamics is crucial for tailoring interventions to address their needs effectively. This study therefore delves into the  intricate mental health dynamics in late-stage HIV patients.

Methods: Conducted at Sori Lakeside Hospital and Kakamega County Referral Hospital in Kenya from May to August 2023, a cross- sectional survey employed a structured data abstraction tool to collect information from patients and their clinical records.

Results: Findings reveal a pervasive impact of delayed diagnosis on psychological well-being, with 43% of participants experiencing high  psychological distress, including anxiety, depression, and trauma. Coping mechanisms varied significantly, with 51% relying on social  support and 22% seeking professional mental health services. Self-esteem was notably low in 37% of cases, while discrimination and  stigma affected 56% of late-stage patients.

Conclusion: The study underscores the significant psychological burden imposed by delayed diagnoses in late-stage HIV patients,  emphasizing its implications for clinical care success. The intricate interplay between physical and psychosocial health highlights the need  for policy focus on social support provision and professional mental health services for HIV patients.
