Misdiagnosed advanced abdominal pregnancy: A case report
Abstract
Abdominal pregnancy is a rare form of ectopic pregnancy (1-1.5%) associated with high maternal mortality (2-30%) and perinatal mortality (40-95%). We present a case report of an undiagnosed advanced abdominal pregnancy at 31 weeks gestation. The patient was referred to the critical care unit due to loss of consciousness for a day. An obstetric scan misdiagnosed the pregnancy as being intrauterine. A decision was made to deliver the fetus via cesarean section. Intraoperatively, an abdominal pregnancy was diagnosed. This case supports the need for a high index of suspicion and timely surgical intervention to decrease the maternal complications.
