Factors influencing staff performance in emergency health care unit: a case of Kenyatta National Hospital
Abstract
Introduction: Employee performance is important to the success of any organization. It is therefore essential for organizations to understand the factors that affect the performance of its employees to help improve quality of service and goal attainment.
Objectives: To determine the influence of training, remuneration, and compensation on performance of staff in the emergency health care unit at Kenyatta National and Referral Hospital (KNRH).
Methodology: This was a descriptive study done on staff at the emergency health care unit at KNRH. The study population was 100 workers at the emergency health unit and after random sampling; a sample size of 80 workers was used in the study. Data was collected using a questionnaire, and analyzed using descriptive statistical measures such as frequencies, means, and standard deviations.
Data management: Data was analyzed using SPSS and presented in form of tables and figures.
Results: The study showed that training strongly and positively influences staff performance at KNRH, r (80) = 0.501, p<.05 compared to remuneration and compensation. Remuneration weakly, but positively, influences staff performance at KNRH, r (80) = 0.378, p<.05 compared to training and compensation, and compensation weakly, but positively influences staff performance at KNRH, r (80) = 0.433, p<.05 compared to training.
Conclusion: Training, remuneration, and compensation have an influence on staff attitude and performance.
Recommendation: KNRH should have more training programs for its employees as this has strong effect on performance. Hospital management should also improve on remuneration and compensation programs to increase the productivity and performance of employees.
