Abstract

Introduction: High altitude retinopathy (HAR), can reduce vision but is usually self-limiting.
The case: We report a case of a 56-year-old Venezuelan who had a long-distance flight to Nigeria following which he had reduced vision in the left eye. Examination findings were a visual acuity of 3 metres counting finger, preretinal haemorrhage overlying the macula and an intraretinal haemorrhage just inferior to the disc. He was observed for 1 month and vision improved to 6/9 with resolution of preretinal haemorrhage.
Conclusion: This is the first reported case of HAR following air travel in Nigeria.
