Bona, Barometer of the Decades
Abstract
The article examines practices of descriptive translation studies (DTS), pertaining particularly to the use of substitution and omission, in articles of a socially sensitive nature in the English and isiZulu texts of the monthly magazine Bona. The argument is that in its cautious approach to political matters Bona, paradoxically, is an accurate barometer of both constraints and opportunities from the apartheid 1950s to today.
