Abstract
Somewhere in his notebooks Athol Fugard writes of Samuel Beckett that he
has succeeded in ‘making man naked again' – when it rains, he says, the rain falls on the skin of his characters. Most of literature deals with the idea of feelings – the appropriate ones, the ones you ought to be feeling – not with the actual ones, the ones that catch you unawares.
