Diagnosis and management of atypically presenting slowly-leaking ectopic pregnancy in a low resource setting: A case report
Abstract
Background: An ectopic pregnancy is a common cause of morbidity and occasionally of mortality in women of reproductive age. Its diagnosis can be difficult with an atypical presentation as the classic symptoms of abdominal pain, amenorrhoea and vaginal bleeding are seen in 50% of women presenting with ectopic pregnancy.
Case: We describe a case of a slowly-leaking ectopic pregnancy that presented without history of abdominal pain and amenorrhoea but with history of “prolonged menstrual flow”.
Conclusion: A high clinical index of suspicion for ectopic pregnancy together with transvaginal sonography and serum assay of BhCG are necessary for diagnosis in atypically presenting cases such as the one described.
