An overview of the conditions of workers and the unions in South Africa and Nigeria

Abstract

This paper discusses the conditions of workers and the unions in South Africa and Nigeria pointing out obstacles and challenges similar in both countries. Whilst the contexts are different, trade unions in Nigeria and South Africa had to contend with the expression of colonialism and neo-colonial oppression in the workplaces. In post-independence, Nigerian unions had to mobilise against neoliberal policies, leading to confrontation with the government of the day. Similarly, in post-apartheid South Africa, unions had to contend with workplace restructuring imposed by employers and the state. Neoliberal attacks on workers and working conditions have also led to changes in the social composition of workers and the rise of precarious forms of work in both countries. Beyond that, union federations are also faced with fragmentation and division, weakening their position to challenge attacks on workers.

Cet article examine les conditions des travailleurs et des syndicats en Afrique du Sud et au Nigéria en soulignant les obstacles et les défis similaires dans les deux pays. Bien que les contextes soient différents, les syndicats au Nigéria et en Afrique du Sud ont dû faire face à l’expression du colonialisme et de l’oppression néocoloniale sur les lieux de travail. Après l’indépendance, les syndicats nigérians ont dû se mobiliser contre les politiques néolibérales, conduisant à une confrontation avec le gouvernement de l’époque. De même, en Afrique du Sud après l’apartheid, les syndicats ont dû faire face à la restructuration du lieu de travail imposée par les employeurs et l’État. Les attaques néolibérales contre les travailleurs et les conditions de travail ont également conduit à des changements dans la composition sociale des travailleurs et à la montée de formes de travail précaires dans les deux pays. Au-delà de cela, les fédérations syndicales sont également confrontées à la fragmentation et à la division, affaiblissant leur position face aux attaques contre les travailleurs.
