Kaoze, le « protégé » du Roi Albert I. Formation, ordination et voyage en Europe

Abstract

La présente contribution s’articule autour de trois moments importants dans la vie de Stéphano Kaoze (ca 1890-1951). Elle veut donner, en premier lieu, quelques éclaircissements sur sa préparation à la prêtrise. Grâce à la formation dont il a bénéficié, on peut le considère à juste titre comme le premier « intellectuel » du Congo moderne. Des documents inédits permettent d’affirmer qu’il n’a pas laissé indifférente le Roi Albert I. Les voyages qu’il a effectué au Congo et en Europe sont documentés par des nouveaux documents inédits. Ainsi, cette étude couvrira une période de la vie de Stéphano Kaoze, allant de 1899 jusqu’en 1921.

The present contribution is articulated around three important moments in the life of Stéphano Kaoze (Ca 1890-1951). Firstly has been taken in consideration the preparation that lead to the catholic priesthood. Thanks to this formation Kaoze can considers rightly as the first "intellectual" of the modern Congo. New documents make it possible to affirm that his personality did not leave indifferent King Albert I. The voyages which he accomplished in Congo and in Europe are documented by unpublished documents. This study covers the period of the life of Stéphano Kaoze, going from 1899 until 1921.
