Bomóngó. The notion of Bomóngó, the Supreme Being by the Mongo (R.D. Congo)

Abstract

Dans la vie de tous les jours, les Mongo, habitant la Province de l'Equateur dans la République Démocratique du Congo, n'utilisent pas souvent le nom officiel de Dieu : Njakomba. Ils préfèrent utiliser le nom Bomóngó, 'le propriétaire'. Par exemple en cas de maladie sérieuse, ils disent : 'Le malade vivra si le Propriétaire le veut.' Dans le texte, on analyse d'abord la signification des termes de 'propriété' et 'propriétaire', à l'aide de plusieurs proverbes, fables et autres textes traditionnels. Puis l'auteur arrive à dégager la signification et les sentiments cachés dans le nom Bomóngó, 'le Propriétaire' par excellence qui ne s'est pas borné à insister sur ses droits mais qui prend plutôt soin de sa propriété avec une attention presque maternelle.

In daily life the Mongo people who live in the Equator Province of the Democratic Republic of Congo, do not often use the official name of God, Njakomba. They prefer to use the name Bomóngó, the Owner. For example, when someone is seriously ill, people will say: 'The patient will live if the Owner allows it'. In the following text, the meaning of the words ownership and owner is studied first with the help of proverbs, fables and other traditional information. After that analysis the author indicates the meaning and the hidden feelings of the word Bomóngó, the great Owner, who does not insist on his rights but who looks after his possession with nearly maternal care.
