Submitting the Manuscript
The Annals of Pediatric Surgery publishes original papers on topics in general pediatric surgery, pediatric urology, pediatric plastic and reconstructive surgery, pediatric otolaryngology, and pediatric surgical training and accreditation. Also featured are case reports, How to Do It papers, articles on our surgical heritage, collective and current reviews, correspondence, and book reviews. Papers should be as brief as possible, consistent with the subject. Short case reports are accepted provided these do not exceed two full pages in the journal (approximately five typewritten pages). Authors submitting a manuscript do so on the understanding that if it is accepted for publication, copyright in the article, including the right to reproduce the article in all forms and media, shall be assigned exclusively to Annals of Pediatric Surgery. The Annals of Pediatric Surgery subscribes in general to the “Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals” (N Engl J Med 336:309-315, 1997).
Manuscripts
Manuscripts containing original material are accepted for consideration if neither the article nor any part of its essential substance, tables, or figures has been or will be published or submitted elsewhere before appearing in the Annals of Pediatric Surgery. Submit 2 hard copies of both the manuscript and original figures, in addition to an electronic copy of the manuscript including a high resolution scanned or digital pictures on CD. A covering letter signed by the principle author should identify the person (with the address, telephone number, and e-mail address) responsible for the manuscript; the letter should make it clear that the manuscript has been seen and approved by all authors and that they have taken due care to ensure the integrity of the work.
Titles and Authors' Names
The first page of manuscript should include: title of the paper; titles should be concise and descriptive; the name(s) of the author(s), including the first name(s); the name of the department and institution in which the work was done; the institutional affiliation of each author; and the name and address of the author to whom reprint requests should be addressed.
Abstract
Provide on a separate page an abstract of not more than 300 words. This abstract should consist of four paragraphs, labeled
Background/Purpose, Patients& Methods, Results, and Conclusions. They should briefly describe, respectively, the problem being addressed in the study, how the study was performed, the salient results, and what the authors conclude from the results.
Index Words:
Three to 10 key words or short phrases should be added to the bottom of the abstract page. Please use terms from the Medical
Subject Headings from Index Medicus.
Text
Generally, the text should be organized as follows: Introduction,Material or Patients and Methods, Results, Discussion, and Conclusion. Quote references, illustrations, and tables in numeric order in the text.
References
References must be numbered consecutively as they are cited.
References first cited in tables or figure legends must be numbered so that they will be in sequence with references cited in the text. The style of references is that of Index Medicus. List all authors when there are three or fewer; when there are four or more, list the first three, then "et al." The following is a sample reference:

Tables
Double-space tables and provide a title for each table. Please print each table on a separate page.
Illustrations
Figures should be professionally designed. Glossy photographs are requested. Symbols, lettering, and numbering should be clear and large enough to remain legible after the figure has been reduced to fit the width of a single column. The back of each figure should include the sequence number, the name of the author, and the proper orientation (e.g., "top"). Photomicrographs should be cropped to a width of 8 cm, and electron photomicrographs should have internal scale markers. If photographs of patients are used, either the subjects should not be identifiable or their pictures must be accompanied by written permission to use the figure. Legends for illustrations should be double -spaced on a separate sheet and should not appear on the illustrations. Color illustrations are encouraged. However, extra costs are requested in these situations.
Abbreviations
Except for units of measurement, abbreviations are generally discouraged. The first time an abbreviation appears it should be
preceded by the words for which it stands.
Drug Names, Suture Materials, and Instruments
Generic names should generally be used.
Permissions
Materials taken from other sources must be accompanied by a
written statement from both author and publisher giving permission to the Journal for reproduction.
Letters to the Editor
Letters to the Editor are considered for publication (subject to editing and abridgment) provided they do not contain material that has been submitted or published elsewhere. Please note the
following:
• Your letter must be typewritten and double-spaced.
• Its text, not including references, must not exceed 250 words if it is in reference to a recent Journal article, or 400 words in all
other cases.
• It must have no more than five references and one figure or
table.
• It must not be signed by more than three authors.
• Letters referring to a recent Journal article must be received
within Six months of its publication.

Images in Clinical Pediatric Surgery
Images in clinical pediatric surgical problems is going to be a
feature of the Annals of Pediatric Surgery that brings classic, common images of various aspects of Pediatric Surgery to its readers. If you would like to submit an image for publication in the Journal please send a high-quality color or black-and-white images. Please send a brief comment not more than 200 words. All material must be original and have been neither published nor submitted elsewhere.
Manuscripts on C D
An electronic copy of the manuscript, scanned figures, should be provided on CD. When submitting CD, authors should:
• Be certain to include a print-out of the version of the article
that is on the disk;
• Put only the latest version of the manuscript on the disk;
• Name the file clearly
Summary of Technical Requirements
• All parts of manuscripts should be double spaced, one column. Please leave right margins unjustified (ragged). Number all pages.
• Review the sequence: title page, abstract and key words, text, acknowledgments, references, tables (each on separate page), legends., Illustrations, and figures
• On the title page, designate a corresponding author and
provide a complete address, Mobile telephone and fax numbers, and e-mail address.
• Include permission to reproduce previously published material or to use illustrations that may identify human subjects.
• Enclose transfer of copyright and other forms.
• Please send: one original and one copy of manuscript,
including, legends, and tables, 2 sets of all illustrations, clearly labeled as described in the instructions, each stapled as a complete unit.
• An electronic copy of the manuscript, scanned figures, should
be provided in on CD. Another CD containing the final version after any corrections made by reviewers will be needed in case of acceptance. Please use Word Text or High Rich Text format.
• Keep copies of everything submitted for your own records
Online Submission
All authors are encouraged to submit their manuscripts online, which will significantly reduce time needed for reviewing process.
In case of online submission, please note the following::
• The complete manuscript should be sent as an attached word
file.
• Each one of the illustrations, figures should be sent as
attached JPEG picture
• Please make sure that both the text and figures should not
exceed one megabyte
• In case of acceptance, an electronic high resolution or a hard
copy of the pictures and illustrations may be required at the printing stage to ensure a high quality prints
Review and Action
Manuscripts are examined by the editorial staff and are usually sent to 2 reviewers either from or outside Egypt. Only one copy of rejected manuscripts will be returned. Decisions about potentially acceptable manuscripts may take up to 6 weeks. For information about the status of a submitted manuscript, please contact executive editor.
