The Relationship between School Structural Characteristics and Job Turnover among Teachers in Cross River State, Nigeria

MB Ubangha

Abstract

The objective was to determine if teachers’ turnover is independent of the structural characteristics of the schools in which they teach. Using stratified random sampling, 365 (215 male and 150 female) teachers were drawn from twelve secondary schools in Cross River State, Nigeria to test the hypothesis that teachers’ job turnover was independent of the school types, size and location in which they teach. The teachers were aged 19 to 60 years with a mean age of 34.1 years. Results showed that teachers’ job turnover was indeed independent of their school location while school size and type had significant effects on their job turnover. Thus, effective administration and management on the part of the school executive and team teaching and organization of effective collegiate support among teachers in large schools would help to reduce attrition.

Key Words: School location, school type, school size, job turnover, teacher retention.
