Risky Sexual Behaviour Among Adolescents in Cross River State, Nigeria: A Reflection of Parenting Style
Abstract
We studied risky sexual behaviour among adolescents in relation to parenting styles in Cross River State, Nigeria. The study was guided by two major research questions, namely: what percentage of adolescents indulge in risky sexual behavior and how does risky sexual behavior reflect parenting styles? A 26-item questionnaire was administered to 3000 respondents ( 1600 males and 1400 females) selected based on stratified and purposive sampling procedures. The results showed that most adolescents experienced first sexual intercourse aged between 12 and 15 years. Most of them indulged in risky sexual behaviour, especially those who perceived their parents’ parenting style as neglecting. Massive awareness campaigns are needed to support parents in discharging their responsibilities to their adolescent children.
