Le Magal à Grand-Bassam : un espace de pèlerinage et de socialisation de la communauté mouride de 2002 à 2022

Abstract

Le Magal est un pèlerinage annuel qui est célébré traditionnellement dans la ville sainte de Touba au Sénégal. Cet évènement religieux  commémore la déportation au Gabon du Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba, fondateur du Mouridisme1 . En raison de son activisme religieux  grandissant dans sa terre natale, il fut contraint à l’exil par le régime colonial français en 1895. Sur le chemin de l’exil, il fit une escale  d’une vingtaine de jours à Grand-Bassam dans l’actuelle Côte d’Ivoire. 2 Ce bref passage donna une impulsion religieuse à la  sacralisation de cette localité . Le Magal fut ainsi célébré à Grand-Bassam en 2002. Les Mourides y viennent pour commémorer, glorifier  ou se rappeler des actes que Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba a posés. Le Magal revêt à la fois un caractère spirituel et temporel pour les  Mourides.

English title: The Magal in Grand-Bassam: a place of pilgrimage a place of pilgrimage and socialisation for the Mouride community from 2002 to 2022

Magal is an annual pilgrimage that is traditionally celebrated in the holy city of Touba in Senegal. This religiousevent commemorates the deportation to Gabon of Sheikh Ahmadou Bamba, founder of Mouridism. Due to his  growing religious activism in his native land, he was  forced into exile by the French colonial regime in 1895. On the way to exile, he made  a stopover of around twenty days in Grand-Bassam  in present-day Ivory Coast. This brief passage gave a religious impetus to the sacralization of this locality. Magal was thus celebrated in  GrandBassam in 2002. The Mourides come there to commemorate, glorify or remember the acts that Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba carried  out. The Magal has both a spiritual and temporal character for the Mourides.
