Drought resistant fodder crops

de Kock GC

Abstract

The deficiency of fodder in the arid and semi-arid regions of the Republic of South Africa can he supplemented with drought resistant fodder crops, which are adapted to make better use of limited moisture, in these areas. The literature in this connection is reviewed and a complete discussion follows of the planting, management, utilisation and feeding value of two important drought resistant fodder crops, namely, spineless cactus (Opuntia spp.) and oldman saltbush (Atriplex nummularia). Mention is made of other promising drought resistant fodder crops.
