The concept of nonsense syllables (Pseudo words) are reading pedagogy
Abstract
Teaching reading at the elementary stages of learning could be a very daunting challenge to teachers at these stages of learning. This is because teachers saddled with this responsibility are sometimes ill- prepared to take up this challenge. Thus in this discourse, an attempt was made to distinguish between phonemic awareness and phonic method of teaching reading. The effort was anchored on how the concept of nonsense syllables (pseudo words) could be used to ease the tension of teaching reading at these levels of teaching. Recommendations were made to elementary teachers of reading based on the personal experience of the writer during a workshop program organised for teachers of English language in Ogun State, Nigeria.
