Physical education and school sport: The International Sport in Education Project (SPINED)

Abstract

The World Summit on Physical Education, held in Berlin in November 1999, called attention to the serious decline in the state and status of physical education and school sport, all over the world. This report outlines the methods of the Sport in Education Project (SpinEd), an international research project, funded by the International Olympic Committee, which offers a response to some of the problems confronting Physical Education and School Sport. It aims to draw together evidence from around the world on the benefits of quality Physical Education and School Sport. The project involves the construction of a framework for evaluating the role of Physical Education and School Sport within the education system; the production of a research summary and annotated bibliography; the collection of examples of good practice from every continent of the world; and the collection of data regarding pupils' perceptions of the outcomes of Physical Education and Sport.
