General
The Haematology and Blood Transfusion Scientists Society of Nigeria (HBTSSN) is a non-profit organization founded in 2018 by career Haematology and Blood Transfusion Scientists in Nigeria for the purpose of charting new directions and advancing their practice.
In May 2018, Professor Zaccheaus Awortu Jeremiah initiated a series of discussions with few Haematology Scientists on the need to have an umbrella body in Nigeria. As a step forward, Dr Musa Abidemi Muhibi (now Professor) was mandated to float a WhatsApp group for the purpose of awareness, sensitization and advocacy. On the 27th of July 2018, the sensitization and awareness programme for the formation of this society was launched and managed by Prof Muhibi on WhatsApp platforms and it was quite interesting to discover the level of enthusiasm and participation of our members.
While the interactions on the WhatsApp platforms lasted, we discussed issues bothering on our way forward. These discussions culminated in our collective decision to inaugurate the learned society during the AMLSN annual AGM in Jos, Nigeria. The inaugural meeting of the society was successfully held at Crest Hotel, Jos, Nigeria on the 13th September 2018 with one hundred and eighty-three (183) members in attendance therefore signalling the take-off of the learned society. The society is fully registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), Nigeria with the registration number RC 122301.
