Economic Evaluation of Small Scale Fish Farmers in Epe Local Government Area of Lagos
Abstract
The study was conducted to assess the profitability and socioeconomic factors influencing small scale fish farming activities in Epe Local Government Area of Lagos State. Primary data was generated from 100 fish farmers purposively selected. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics, costreturns analysis and regression analysis. Findings revealed that fish farming was profitable with gross margin estimated at N610, 727.12 (USD $4071.51) and mean net income was N71, 742.58 (USD $478.28). Level of education, farm size, household size, fish farming experience, fish species culture, feed used, and number of labour used are significant and positive in the determination of the level of fish output. The study recommends that government should be committed to the funding of fish farming through the grant of loans and subsidization of fish farming inputs to produce multiplier effects on fish production.
