Comparative Analysis Of The Demand For Beef And Chevon Among Households In Enugu Metropolis Of Enugu State, Nigeria
Abstract
Beef and Chevon, are different kinds of meats derived from cattle and which are mostly consumed by households in Enugu metropolis. This study was conducted to compare the demand for these two major sources of protein in the metropolis. The data for the study was from both primary and secondary sources. Secondary data was collected from existing relevant literatures. The primary data was collected from field survey using questionnaires administered to randomly selected 105 households in the study area. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple regression. The results showed that beef had a higher demand in terms of quantity consumed and frequency of purchase than chevon, although there was no statistical difference in their consumption. The results also indicated that the household\'s monthly expenditure on beef was higher than that on
chevon and that both meat types made a significant proportion of household\'s expenditure on food items. Household\'s total expenditure and non-resident household members were significant in explaining household\'s consumption of beef; while household\'s total expenditure was the only significant variable that explained household\'s consumption of chevon. The expenditure elasticities were 0.855 and 0.618 for beef and chevon respectively.
