Abstract

The study was designed to determine the quantitative relationship between poverty level and meat consumption in the study area. Cross-sectional data collected from 120 respondents were analysed using frequency distribution and regression analysis. The study shows that 66.67% of the respondents are in the highest poverty group. They consumed 23g meat per caput per day. The lowest poverty group constitutes 6.67% of the respondent, and they consumed 74g meat per caput per day. Statistical analysis showed that poverty has significant, elastic but negative effect on meat purchasing. Poverty accounts for 42.00% variation in meat purchasing. The study establishes low meat consumption level among the poor and recommends urgent steps to ameliorate the situation.
