The African Journal of Alcohol and Drug Abuse (AJADA) is a publication of the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA). NACADA is a State Corporation established under the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse Act, 2012 of the Laws of Kenya.
AJADA is an open access, peer reviewed, multidisciplinary journal, committed to high quality output publications with an international audience seeking reliable information on alcohol and drug abuse. AJADA contributes to new research discoveries in areas related to alcohol and drug abuse and publishes articles with a clear intention of delivering the vision of NACADA. The Journal is not only established to fulfil the mandate of NACADA but also offers credible information to the public while strengthening research development. The journal is devoted to advancing global trends, contextual issues in Africa and beyond, practice, theoretical implications and policies useful in the management of alcohol and drug abuse. Currently, AJADA is published bi-annually both online and in print. Submitted articles span a full spectrum of multidisciplinary practitioners and researchers with interest in alcohol and drug abuse within the following thematic areas:
- Prevention and Advocacy – Prevention strategies in learning institutions, families, communities and workplaces.
- Enforcement – Strategies geared towards minimizing the supply of alcohol and drugs. This entails control mechanisms, regular surveillance andcompliance to standards & regulations.
- Policy and Legislation – Studies on national effectiveness of policies & legislations, evaluation,continuous reviews and policy briefings.

- Treatment and Rehabilitation – Studies on evidence-based treatment models, substance use disorders & mental illnesses, clinical interventions including harm reduction, treatment for co-occurring disorders, community-based interventions, social re-integration and relapse prevention.
- Education, training and capacity building – Papers on education models, training & capacity building that aim at translating knowledge into action towards promoting effective prevention and mitigation strategies.
- Research – Studies on alcohol and drug abuse, evidence-based interventions & best practices, new frontiers in research, National Drug Observatory (NDO) experiences, case studies and operational survey findings on alcohol and drug abuse programming.
- Partnerships and Community–Based Initiatives - Papers and discussions on best practices in resource mobilization on alcohol and drug abuse programs, multi-sectoral, multi-agency, multi-disciplinary collaborations, community-oriented systems and practices and role of CSOs and public entities in alcohol and drug abuse prevention.
ABOUT
Aim
The aim of the African Journal of Alcohol and Drug Abuse (AJADA) is to provide an avenue to exchange evidence-based information and best practices on the areas of Prevention, Advocacy, Policy Development & Briefs, Legislation, Enforcement, Treatment & Rehabilitation and other matters relating to alcohol and drug abuse. The journal celebrates a global readership of Researchers, Counseling Psychologists, Sociologists, Anthropologists, Social Scientists, Public Health Specialists, Psychiatrists and other practitioners.
Scope
AJADA is a multi-disciplinary open access and peer reviewed journal publishing articles in the field of alcohol and drug abuse. It publishes papers on matters of alcohol and drug abuse with a particular focus on African perspectives.
SUBMISSION
Submission by authors implies that the content has not been published or submitted for publication elsewhere except as a brief abstract in the proceedings of a conference or symposium. Once the manuscript is prepared in accordance with the guidelines, it should be submitted online at submissions.ajada@nacada.go.ke
Manuscript Categories
Research Article: These articles provide the clear description of new findings of chief importance. The word limit is 5000 words excluding abstract, references, tables or figures and other annexes.
Review Article: These articles provide the systematic insights of latest advancements and current happenings in the field of alcohol and drug abuse. Systematic reviews; meta-analysis of research findings; invited commentaries on topics of special interest to the field; and report on dissemination or implementation of alcohol and drug abuse interventions. The word limit is 5000 words excluding abstract, references, tables or figures and other annexes.
Short Communication: These articles communicate a clear description of novel findings or ideas in the field of alcohol and drug abuse without covering detailed background information about the problem or intervention but rather give key pointers that other scholars can interrogate. The word limit is 2500 words excluding abstract, references, tables or figures.
Policy Briefings: These articles are concise summary of a particular issue, policy option or recommendation for best practices. The word limit is 2500 words excluding abstract, references, tables or figures and other annexes.
Editorial: These articles convey views on any theme relevant to the journal's concerns that contain no more than 1200 words excluding references.
Letters: Letters are written to convey any views or perspectives on current research interests or problems. The word limit is 1200 words excluding references. There should be no figures and tables in this type of manuscript.
Preparation of the Manuscript
Manuscripts should be presented in the following order:

Manuscript Formatting Guidelines
Title Page: Title must be precise, self-explanatory and brief (not more than 25 words). The Font Size of the title should be Times New Roman 14, bold and centered.
Corresponding author details with their affiliation(s) (surname, other names, institution and Country) must be mentioned below the Title. The corresponding author should be starred in the authors list. Corresponding author should be provided with complete affiliation, contact number and e-mail address.
Abstract: Each manuscript must contain an abstract of no more than 300 words for all articles. An abstract need to be concise, informative, self-explanatory and must be free from citations. It should be single spaced, Font 11, Times New Roman.
Keywords: Keywords should be precisely picked from the manuscript and comprise of those most commonly used words in the article. The limit is 8 keywords.
Introduction: This section should lay a strong background for the study to enable the readers to understand the purpose and need for the study. This section should contain citations of previously published research studies and literature relevant to the topic that are used in the article. The introduction should clearly highlight the empirical and theoretical literature review, research gaps, research focus, research questions and objectives.
Methodology: This section should provide detailed procedures; techniques; and methods applied in the research e.g. study design, sample and sampling techniques, instruments and procedures, data analysis and other methodological details critical for replication. This section may have multiple sub-sections as per the number of methods and methodologies used.
Results: This section should describe the results of the study. They should be in line with the objectives and analytical framework while providing a summary of the most remarkable findings.
Discussion: This section aims at analyzing, interpreting and synthesizing the findings in the context of existing literature while suggesting future directions for research, new methods and explanations for deviations including support for previously published results from credible sources.
Conclusions: This should clearly articulate the outcome of the synthesis of the findings while giving a sense of completeness and a final impression on the reader showing the importance of the research statement.
Acknowledgements and Funding
The author should acknowledge people, grants, funds, etc. that contributed towards the success of the work.
Authors should also declare whether or not they have competing interests.
Figures and Tables: All figures and tables should include the relevant captions, titles, description or footnotes using the APA format.
Reference Formatting
AJADA publishes all reference lists in APA style (Publication Manual of the APA, Latest Edition). Non authoritative sources should not be used for references. The following is a sample of a reference list entry for a journal article and a book chapter.

Editorial Polices
AJADA is a multidisciplinary journal addressing issues related to alcohol and drug abuse. Contributors to the journal examine and report on alcohol and drug abuse from a wide range of clinical, epidemiological, psychological and sociological perspectives. AJADA particularly encourages the submission of manuscripts focusing on the areas of Prevention, Advocacy, Policy Development & Briefs, Legislation, Enforcement, Treatment & Rehabilitation and other matters relating to alcohol and drug abuse.
Manuscripts are accepted on the basis of their quality, originality and significance to the readership. All manuscripts will be evaluated and those deemed appropriate for publication will be peer reviewed by at least two reviewers. Final acceptance or rejection rests with the Editorial Board. In addition, statements and opinions expressed in the articles and communications appearing in the journal and those of the authors are not necessarily those of the editors and publisher. The editors and publisher disclaim any responsibility or liability for such material. Neither the editors nor the publisher guarantee, warrant, or endorse any product or service advertised in this publication, nor do they guarantee any claim made by the author.

This is an open access journal with authors retaining copyrights for their manuscripts. Manuscripts are reusable in other forms and media with proper citation of the original paper. Publication Ethics
Reporting Standards: Authors of reports of original research should present an accurate account of the work performed as well as an objective discussion of its significance. A paper should contain sufficient detail and references to permit others to replicate the work. Fraudulent or knowingly making inaccurate statements constitute unethical behaviour and are unacceptable. Review and professional publication articles should also be accurate and objective, and editorial ‘opinion’ works should be clearly identified as such.
Data Access and Retention: Authors may be asked to provide the research data supporting their paper for editorial review. Authors should be prepared to retain such data for a period of five (5) years after publication.
Originality and Acknowledgement of Sources: All submissions should be original work and free from plagiarism. The work should be written in an impersonal style. Declaration of authorship or originality should be declared and written permissions to use non-original material sought.
Concurrent Publication: Once a manuscript is submitted to AJADA, an author should not submit the same to any other journal during the review period.
Confidentiality: Information obtained from confidential sources must not be used without the written permission from the authors, organization or funders of the work.
Authorship of the Paper: Authorship should be limited to those who have made significant contribution to the conception, design, execution, or interpretation of the reported study. They should be listed as co-authors. The corresponding author should ensure that only the appropriate co-authors are included on the manuscript, and that all co-authors have reviewed, approved and agreed to the submission of the final version of the manuscript for publication. Authors are expected to consider the list and order of authors before submitting their manuscript.
Hazards and Human or Animal Subjects: If the work involves chemicals, procedures or equipment that have any unusual hazards inherent in their use, the author must clearly identify these in the manuscript. If the work involves the use of animal or human subjects, the author should ensure that the manuscript contains a statement that all procedures were performed in compliance with relevant laws and institutional guidelines and that the appropriate institutions have approved them. Authors must include a statement in the manuscript that informed consent was obtained for experimentation with human subjects.
Privacy Statement
The names and email addresses entered in this journal site are used exclusively for the stated purposes of this journal and will not be made available for any other purpose or to any other party.
Online Access
The AJADA open access content is universally available in an easily readable format on internet and also in print. The AJADA strictly adheres to all the open access policies. All the published content is permanently deposited in the archive.
