Investigating the Factors Contributing to the Disempowerment of Women in Swaziland: Perceptions of Swazi Women and Non-governmental Organisations Operating in Swaziland
Abstract
The disempowerment of women is a major ause of poverty and other societal ills faced by many African countries. As the social fabric of society, the breakdown of the family has unfortunately resulted in the neglect of children, crime and HIV/AIDS, among others. This study uncovered that culture, lack of financial family support, lack of information and limited government assistance have all contributed to the disempowerment of women. Similarly, dual legal systems and funding have also made it difficult for NGOs in Swaziland to empower women. On the contrary, empowerment through dialogue was identified as a significant positive factor towards uplifting women. The study makes further recommendations to the government of Swaziland to look into practical ways of improving the lives of its women and children.
