Women’s participation in the care economy during Covid-19 pandemic Case studies of South Africa and Egypt
Abstract
This paper examines the changes, challenges and inequalities that women faced as paid care service providers during the pandemic. The study involved desktop research. The findings revealed significant disruptions in the care economy, with increased demand for care services. The study confirmed that intersecting factors, including under-valuation of the contribution of care work and economic disparities, shaped women’s participation in the care economy during crises. The nalysis emphasises the urgent need for gender-sensitive policies and support systems in terms of remuneration and better working conditions. The findings offer valuable insight into promoting gender equality and a resilient care economy in South Africa, Egypt and other similar contexts.
