Critiquing Botswana’s National Ecotourism Strategy through a Gender Lens: Gaps and Opportunities for the Future
Abstract
Using a gender lens,1 this article textually critiques Botswana’s national ecotourism strategy and finds that, while the document mentions matters of gender, this is done superficially and as such is in need of revision. This type of oversight is symptomatic of how broader ecotourism policies and academia on tourism tend to include gender, if at all, with ‘smart economics’ in mind. Literature and reflections from fieldwork are used to further contextualise arguments and highlight why a more gender-sensitive policy framework is needed.
