Understanding the Ageing Process, Problems Associated With it and how to age Gracefully in the Nigerian Society
Abstract
More people are surviving up to age 65 and above. The magnitude of the increase has led to a popular perception that population ageing may alter important social institutions as the economy of old age siphon resources away from education and investment in productive capacity. The challenge is therefore to recast the ageing population as a national resources rather than a social drain. This is achievable through the understanding of the ageing process, problems associated with it and how to age successfully. There is therefore, need to make significant policy changes in the care of health, income, retirement, social support, and adult education as they affect the aged. This paper therefore discusses the problems associated with ageing, how to promote successful and productive ageing and their policy implications.
