Analysis of women’s farm participation in Rwanda: A multinomial logistic regression approach
Abstract
This study uses National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda cross-section data (EICV 5), with a sample of 16,829 women aged 20 and above, to examine the relationship between women's participation in agricultural activities and various socioeconomic factors. The Multinomial Logistic Regression Model was employed to evaluate women's responses across all 30 districts in Rwanda. Agricultural activities are classified into three categories: farming, livestock management, and household activities. According to the findings, education, marital status, age, household size, household head, and location all have a significant impact on women's farming participation. The findings also show that women who have not completed secondary school are more likely to engage in farming activities than women with advanced education. This study advocates for improving women's education, particularly beyond the secondary level, in order to increase their participation in economic activities, particularly non-farming activities, which will benefit them not only by increasing their income but also by decreasing their reliance on agriculture.
