A study of the aetiology of anaemia in hospitalized newborns
Abstract
Background: Anaemia contributes significantly to neonatal morbidity and mortality. This study describes the aetiology of anemia in ill babies in order to highlight the underlying conditions, proffer preventive measures and sensitize Physicians to improve on the management of anemia in babies.
Methods: This was a retrospective survey of anaemia in babies admitted for various conditions into the Neonatal Unit of Modic Medical Centre from January 2009 to December 2013. Information sought included bio -data, clinical features, investigations, diagnosis and outcome.
Results: Ninety four babies presented with anaemia over the 5-year period. Fifty six (59.6%) of the subjects were males while 38 (40.4%) were females. The median age of the subjects was 6 days. The leading causes of anemia were Sepsis (41.5%), bleeding Circumcision (15.9%) and Hemorrhagic Disease of the Newborn (12.8%).
Conclusion: There is need to improve newborn and antenatal services in Benin City.
