Diabetic ketoacidosis in a young Nigerian child: a case report
Abstract
In this case report, the occurrence of diabetic ketoacidosis in a 33 month old child is discussed. Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus, formerly known as insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, is characterized by pancreatic islet B-cell destruction, and mediated by immune mechanism. The peculiar features of diabetes mellitus are described, and despite the mother’s presentation at a private clinic at onset of symptoms, diagnosis was missed until patient presented in diabetic ketoacidosis. It is hoped that the level of awareness of this condition in young children will be increased, to avert possible morbidity and mortality.
