Idiopathic complete sigmorectal intussusception mimicking rectal prolapse in a 9-month-old boy
Abstract
Idiopathic complete sigmorectal intussusception which prolapsed through the anus thereby mimicking rectal prolapse is a rare presentation. The management of a 9-month-old male infant who was presented to our unit within three hours of anal protrusion of a sigmorectal intussusception is presented. Consequently the baby had exploratory laparotomy, with subsequent stability in his health condition and was followed up for 8 months. This highlights the importance of early diagnosis and prompt treatment in preventing associated morbidity and mortality.
