Review process

After the online submission of the paper by the author through schloraOnemanuscript, the editorial committee (EC) verifies that the submitted manuscript format agrees with the Annales Africaines de Médecine (Ann. Afr. Med.) guidelines. If ok, the EC checks for plagiarism before sending the manuscript to the Editor (EIC, Deputy Editor or associate Editor). When plagiarism is detected we follow the recommendations of Committee on Publications Ethics (COPE). The EIC makes a quick decision as to whether the manuscript is worth publishing in the Ann. Afr. Med. (if not EIC send the paper back to the authors for any changes needed before passing it on the editors), and then refers the paper to an Editorial Board member (Associate Editor) on the basis of his relative expertise on the topic. The Associate Editor then assigns at least 2 reviewers who should be knowledgeable on the subject under consideration in the paper. The reviewers are expected to critically analyze the manuscript and report their evaluation of the work to the Associate Editor within 2 weeks. Based on this assessment, the Associate Editor makes a recommendation to the EIC who discusses the final decision with the Editorial Board (acceptation with or without minor revision, necessity of a major revision or rejection). During the whole process, the authors are not aware of the identity of the Associate Editor and the reviewers. In return, the reviewers do not know the identity of the authors.

Reviewer Guidelines

The evaluation of scientific articles submitted to AAM should be critical, independent and unbiased. The evaluation should take into account the respect of ethical guidelines and research subject privacy rights as well as deal with potential conflicts of interest for the parties involved in the work.

The EIC makes a quick decision as to whether the manuscript is worth publishing in journal, and then refers the paper to an Editorial Board member (Associate Editor) on the basis of his relative expertise on the topic. The Associate Editor then assigns at least 2 reviewers who should be knowledgeable on the subject under consideration in the paper. The reviewers are expected to critically analyze the manuscript and report their evaluation of the work to the Associate Editor within 2 weeks. The referee is expected to provide his opinion on 2 types of issues:

1. Originality and scientific quality of the article

2. Interest of the content to the readership

Referees are encouraged to read the AAM authors guidelines prior to evaluating the papers because authors are normally asked to write on the basis of these guidelines.

An evaluation report on the article should be sent to the Editor including a courteously written section for comments to the authors. This report should generally consist of 4 sections as follows:

Recommandations aux evaluateurs

L’évaluation des articles scientifiques des Annales Africaines de Médecine doit être critique, indépendante et non-biaisée tout en respectant les principes fondamentaux de confidentialité et de déclaration des conflits d’intérêts.

Au cours du processus de soumission et d’évaluation, le rôle de l’administrateur technique est de vérifier que toutes les pièces soumises par les auteurs sont conformes aux recommandations de la revue sur le plan de la qualité technique aussi bien la détection du plagiat et d’envoyer ensuite l’article au Rédacteur en Chef. Celui-ci assigne un rédacteur associé parmi les membres du Comité de Rédaction en fonction de leur compétence par rapport au thème traité par l’article en question. Le rédacteur associé réfère ensuite l’article aux évaluateurs choisis parmi les membres du comité de lecture et/ou invite des évaluateurs externes pour lire et fournir endéans 2 semaines au  rédacteur associé, leur opinion sur l’article concerné. Sur base de  cette évaluation, le rédacteur associé fait une suggestion auprès du Rédacteur en Chef qui prend la décision finale (soit acceptation avec ou sans révision mineure, soit nécessité d’une révision majeure, soit un rejet). Durant tout le processus d’évaluation, les auteurs ne connaissent pas l’identité du rédacteur associé et des évaluateurs qui en retour ne sont pas au courant de l’identité des auteurs (mode d’évaluation en double aveugle).

L’évaluateur est censé fournir son opinion sur 2 types de questions:

1. Originalité et qualité scientifique de l’article

2. Intérêt de l’article pour les lecteurs: y a-t-il suffisamment d’intérêt de la part des lecteurs pour justifier la publication de l’article

Les évaluateurs d’articles soumis aux AAM devraient au préalable prendre connaissance des recommandations aux auteurs du journal, étant donné que les auteurs écrivent normalement sur base de ces recommandations.
